UIndy is among five schools within 20 points of each other going into the stretch run competing for the 2009-10 Great Lakes Valley Conference's All-Sports trophy. The Greyhounds (117 pts.) currently sit in third place, 12 points behind leader Drury (129), who vaulted into the top spot thanks to winning both men's and women's conference tennis titles last weekend and strong showings in both golf championships.

Northern Kentucky is in second place with 119.5 points while Bellarmine (112) and Southern Indiana (109.5) are both in striking distance heading into the final four league titles up for grabs (baseball, softball, men's and women's outdoor track & field). The Hounds are among the leaders in all four of those sports, so it will be a fun ride to see who comes out on top (note: outdoor and indoor track points are averaged).

Indianapolis is attempting to claim its third all-sports trophy and first since 2002-03. UIndy has finished in the top two four times this decade.

The Big DANCE

With the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Final Four being held in Indianapolis this weekend, all eyes were on Lucas Oil Stadium Friday for the start of the festivities surrounding one of the biggest championship events. And, with cross-town qualifier Butler advancing to the Final Four, it made for a festive day as all four teams held open practices at the stadium-- but more importantly, for our Greyhound friends, it was also the "Mascot Dance-Off", pitting mascots from local schools and companies in a competition of footwork frenzy.

Among those invited to the Dance Off were the Jaguar from IUPUI (Jaws), the Bulldog from Butler (Blue), Purdue Pete and a Hershey's bar among many others. The Top Dog, and WINNER turned out to be Indy the Greyhound, a proud supporter of UIndy Athletics, donning his home white uniform (#42) and an infectious attitude that had the fans rolling with laughter.

While we "grappled" with dilvulging just who was inside the costume doing all the dancing, we decided to keep it under wraps. After all, we wouldn't want to "pin" this individual into having to perform on command if his/her cover was blown. "Wrestling" with this decision, we thought it best to "escape" any pain delivered from the individual inside and let you come to your own conclusions.

A "heavyweight bout" of dance commenced on the Lucas Oil Stadium floor and the fans were treated to a great time. If you're still wondering whom this masked performer might be, picture Nicoson Hall, a headband and a group of followers at UIndy basketball games.

We're Going Streaking!

Greyhound sports have benefited from lengthy winning streaks this season en route to successful seasons. Three teams have etched the longest winning streaks in their program's history and others have posted impressive runs as well.

School records
(24) *Head coach Jody Butera's volleyball squad, after winning its first 14 matches of the season, lost to arch-rival Lewis at home on Sep. 18. From there, UIndy would win 24 straight matches, including a pair of 3-0 victories over Lewis to win both the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament and the NCAA Midwest Regional tourney. The Hounds would finish the season ranked sixth in the national coaches poll with a school-record 38-2 mark after a loss to the eventual-national champion (Concordia-St. Paul) in the NCAA Elite Eight.

(24) *Head coach LeAnn Freeland and her women's basketball squad rattled-off 24 consecutive wins to start the season. The team qualified for the NCAA tournament for the third straight season and finished with a 26-4 mark and a No. 5 national ranking in the last regular season coaches poll.

(13) *Melissa Frost-Fisher, head coach of the UIndy softball team, guided her team to 13 straight wins to combat a sluggish 3-7 start. The Hounds have used the wins to sit near the top of the GLVC standings while compiling a hefty 14-4 in-region record.

Other streaks:
*Head coach Gary Vaught's baseball team recently snapped a nine-gamer. The Hounds have won 15 of their last 18 games heading into this weekend.

*Head coach Geoff VanDeusen's women's soccer team got off to a 6-0 start in the 2009 campaign. The Greyhounds rose that momentum all the way to another NCAA tournament appearance (the second in school history) and a 15-6 overall mark.

*The UIndy women's tennis team, led by head coach John Venter, boasted a modest five-match winning streak as it headed into conference play and now sports an 8-2 overall mark.

It's Spring Break and that means plenty of time to relax and revive for the final weeks of the semester. Well, not if you are a student-athlete. The time away from class means a chance to travel. There are 10 Greyhound teams competing this week, including four in NCAA postseason action. You'd have to be able to stretch six states and Puerto Rico to be able to catch them all in action at the same time. SOFTBALL
UIndy will play eight games in Florida in the Rebel Spring Games in the Kissimmee, Fla. area. Following the week in the Sunshine State. Catch the updates and scores here.

BASEBALL
The Greyhounds travel to Southern Indiana in the first conference games of the season. UIndy will battle the Screaming Eagles on Friday and Saturday before taking on Maryville Sunday. Live stats at USI and at Maryville.

WOMEN'S GOLF
Two different tournaments are on tap for the women's golf team. After already posting a second-place finish last Friday and Saturday at the Lewis Shootout, the Greyhounds will remain in Arizona to play in the Desert Invite. The tournament is a preview of the 2010 NCAA D-II National Championship, featuring seven of the eight competing teams ranking in the top 20 in the Golf World /NGCA Women's Division II Coaches' Poll. MEN'S GOLF
The 11th-ranked UIndy men’s golf team put together a solid second round to vault to seventh place at the Division-I-heavy Palmas Del Mar Intercollegiate in Humacao, Puerto Rico. The Greyhounds rebounded from a 309 Monday to card a 292 on Tuesday to jump to the middle of the pack at the talent-rich 14-team event. They'll finish on Wednesday and we'll have a recap here.

TENNIS
The Greyhound tennis teams are in the midst of a wek-long trek through Florida in some of the final competition before starting the bulk of the Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule. As of late Wednesday, the Greyhound women are 7-1 on the season and the men sport a 6-5 overall record. Catch boxscores as they become available women and men.

UIndy leads GLVC All-Sports trophy standings

With the Greyhounds' men's track & field team picking-up its first-ever Great Lakes Valley Conference Indoor Championship last weekend, the University of Indianapolis moved into the lead for the league's All-Sports Trophy. The award recognizes the conference school that is successful across the board among all of its varsity sports.

UIndy boasts 63.0 points (as of Mar. 3) and leads Bellarmine by two points. Lewis is third with 59 while Northern Kentucky has 58 points heading into the weekend. Conference championships will be contested in both women's and men's basketball, determining points breakdowns for those sports. Those will be the final updates until the spring season commences with golf, tennis, baseball, softball and outdoor track & field.

Indianapolis is gunning for its third All-Sports trophy and first since the 2002-03 campaign. This season's fall success was lynch-pinned by the volleyball team's league title and a GLVC semifinals showing for the women's soccer team.

Making sense of GLVC tournament

Since the addition of two new teams (Maryville and Illinois-Springfield) this season, the Great Lakes Valley Conference has gone to a 5-team, 3-division format for basketball. The postseason tournament format also changed with 12 teams advancing to the championships. With just Monday's make-up games between Quincy and Southern Indiana left, here is a look at the tournament for both Greyhound teams.

Women's
UIndy earned the right to host first round and quarterfinal round games by grabbing the top seed in the GLVC East division. Missouri-St. Louis and Saint Joseph's will meet in the first round game Saturday with the winner advancing to play UIndy in the quarterfinals on Sunday. Game times are set for 1:00 p.m. EST both days. The winner of Sunday's game will advance to the semifinal round in Springfield, Ill. Mar. 6-7.

Coming into the stretch drive for winter sports and an exciting couple of weeks in store. Snapshots of where we sit heading into the final few weeks of the winter campaigns:

Women's Basketball: Team is ranked #4 in the nation, No. 2 in the Midwest Region heading into Saturday's regular season finale at Northern Kentucky. UIndy (24-2) will host a Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament first round and quarterfinal round game. Missouri St. Louis and Saint Joseph's will play Saturday, Feb. 27 at Nicoson Hall with the winner playing UIndy the following day at 1:00 p.m. in the GLVC quarterfinals. Winner heads to Springfield, Ill. for the semifinal/final rounds.

Men's Basketball: Can clinch GLVC East No. 3 seed with a win in the regular season finale at Northern Kentucky. The No. 3 seed travels to the top seed in the GLVC North, which will be either Quincy or Saint Joseph's and will play Missouri S&T in the first round. The East's No. 4 seed has to travel to Drury and will battle Lewis in the opening round game.

Swimming and Diving: Nine athletes are currently qualified to head to the NCAA Division II Championships in Canton, Ohio in March. Andrew Loshnowsky, Austin Biefnes, Guy Kogel, Justin Klopp, Meghan Donahue, Jaclyn Luscomb, Erica Smith, Maura Donahue and Alex Norris are the Greyhounds that have already punched their ticket to the national meet.

Wrestling: The Greyhounds head to Central Missouri to compete in the NCAA Super Regionals. There, they will wrestle for the right to advance to the NCAA Division II Championships set for Mar. 12-13 in Omaha, Neb. Two UIndy wrestlers are currently nationally-ranked in their respective weight class: Lynn Panko (285) and Alex Johns (125).

Track and Field: The track teams are gearing up for the Great Lakes Valley Conference Indoor Championships set for Frank Petretti Fieldhouse on the campus of Wisconsin-Parkside Feb. 26-27. The Greyhound women are the defending champions while the men finished second in the indoor meet in 2009.

Pink Zone Monday

The University of Indianapolis will be helping raise breast cancer awareness when it hosts a "Pink Zone" game in the regular season home finale Feb. 15. The UIndy women's basketball team will be decked-out in pink uniforms and fans wearing the most pink will be eligible for prizes. Donations will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

He saw his shadow. So what?

Another busy week in UIndy athletics with winter sports hitting the home stretch in their seasons and yes, even SPRING SPORTS starting this weekend! Punxsutawney Phil (the groundhog) may have seen his shadow--meaning six more weeks of winter--but spring starts this week for athletics programs.

*UIndy softball travels to Arkansas Tech to open its season. The fifth-ranked Greyhounds will play four nationally-ranked teams in February despite not having the opportunity to play outside yet.

*The men's golf team will open Sunday at the GolfWeek Spring Invitational, a tournament which will feature a verytough field of top Division II programs.

*Hall of Fame festivities will take place Saturday on campus. Five individuals and two teams will be enshrined at a ceremony following the basketball doubleheader with Drury.

*Wednesday, Feb. 3 is "National Signing Day". It's the first official day of a signing period for the sports of football, soccer and track & field. Check athletics.uindy.edu for updates on signees Wednesday afternoon as they become available.

#2- The UIndy women's basketball team moved-up a spot to No. 2 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Top 25 poll, released Tuesday. The Hounds are one of just four undefeated teams left in NCAA Division II.

#1(?)- The Hounds hope to land the top spot in the NCAA Regional Rankings released Wednesday. With a 19-0 resume, the Greyhounds will be in the hunt along with nationally-ranked Michigan Tech (#4).

As the week starts, the spotlight continues to shine on the UIndy women's basketball team, who improved to 19-0 Saturday with a 30-point win over Kentucky Wesleyan. Saturday's win was the 17th win by double-digits for UIndy. Of those, nine have come by 20+ and six wins are of 30 points or more.

*The Hounds are currently ranked #3 in the nation, but will more than likely move up with Saturday's loss by #2 Delta State.

*Check out the replays of Saturday's basketball games (vs. Kentucky Wesleyan) Monday night on HomeTownSports Indiana. Comcast and Brighthouse digital customers can pick it up on channel 81. Check their website for local listings. The games are scheduled to air at 6:00 (women) and 8:00 p.m. (men).

*In the "Really?" category (but still worth mentioning): UIndy has already secured a spot in the upcoming Great Lakes Valley Conference women's basketball tournament. The 12-team tourney begins on Feb. 27 on campus sites. The Hounds, who are the first to clinch a spot, will be vying for one of the top four seeds to host that opening round then the quarterfinals. With the tourney expanding to 12 teams, the Greyhound men's team is also assured of advancing to the tournament. 12 men's teams are eligible for the postseason this year and currently UIndy is just two games back of what essentially would be the #2 seed in the East, since Southern Indiana is ineligible for the postseason.

Greyhounds football to play in GLVC

The University of Indianapolis football team will play in the newly-formed GLVC football conference beginning in the 2012 season. UIndy plays in the GLVC in 17 varsity sports already and will leave the GLIAC in football following the 2011 season.

Here's the statement regarding the formation of the new GLVC football league.

Current GLVC members playing football include: Quincy, Kentucky Wesleyan, Saint Joseph's, Missouri S&T and newcomer William Jewell.

*GLVC Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll will likely be released Thursday. UIndy ranked #15 in the nation in the preseason poll and were one out from being regional champs. Good chance they join the Greyhound softball team as favorites? We'll find out...

*Adrian Moss has transferred in to the UIndy men's basketball team from IUPUI. He will redshirt this season but will have two seasons of eligibility remaining for Coach Gouard beginning in '10-11. Lightning quick 5-foot-9 guard--fun to watch.

*NCAA Convention is happening in Atlanta, Ga. this weekend. Among the hot-button topics will be the proposal to shrink seasons in select Division II sports. Read more about it here on the official page of the NCAA.

Tidbits about some news coming out this week...

#3- UIndy women's basketball's national ranking is #3 as of Jan. 11. The Greyhounds are 14-0 and are outscoring opponents by over 27 points per game this season.

#2- Junior Samantha Meissel won her second Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week award Monday. She leads the league with a 21.1 ppg average and is fifth in all of NCAA Division II in scoring.

#1- UIndy softball was picked the unanimous choice among GLVC coaches in the preseason poll. The Greyhounds were the top choice after compiling a 37-21 mark last year, winning the Midwest Regional and advancing to the D-II World Series.

Well, the sports season hit in the fall and has not slowed down since. The Greyhounds enjoyed a phenomenal fall season and are already deep into the winter scene. We'll use the next few blog posts over the coming days to recap some of the highlights.

DAY FOUR AT THE CWS
Off day for the team as they prepare to play Saturday at noon against Dixie State. DSC lost to North Georgia on the opening day, so the winner will advance while the loser gets an early exit.

7:07pm- On the recommendation from our awesome host, Bill Jones, we head to Mamma Maria's Italian Restaurant in Salem. It is a neat little place that will accomodate our big crew of the entire team, administrators, coaches, parents and family.

DAY FIVE AT THE CWS
11:10am- I'm just arriving at the ballpark and already see a ton of supporters making the trek to Salem to cheer on the Hounds. Among those in attendance were Head Baseball Coach Gary Vaught, Assistant Women's Basketball Coach Jen Conely, former players Beth Wendlinger, Lindsey Mishevich, Megan Hall and Kathy Blanchard. And more parents and families. And tons more listening on WICR FM or logged onto the NCAA's video webcast.

12:00pm- It's first ups for UIndy again and black unis.

12:14pm- Megan Russell in trouble in the top of the first, runners on second and third with none down.

12:17pm- Russell gets two grounders and a K to escape without allowing a run!

12:25pm- The Hounds plate a pair on Lindsey Gustine's two-out, two-strike single to take a 2-0 lead.

12:40pm- Jessica Breeden hits a screaming liner over the right center fence for a 3-0 Greyhound advantage.

1:37pm- Greyhounds close-out the win and advance to play Lock Haven at 4:00.

1:57pm- Coach Frost-Fisher along with Jessica Breeden and Lindsey Gustine answer questions at the postgame presser. The winning team's interview sessions are being videotaped and posted online here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgtxb7Y9ojA.

4:00pm- Ready for game two of the day and the Lock Haven Lady Eagles stand in the way. LHU superstar Kristen Erb is going for her 47th win of the season against just five losses.

4:37pm- LHU grabs the early lead and adds another on a sacrifice fly in the 2nd inning.

5:17pm- Megan Russell still pitching well, keeping the Lady Eagles mainly in check. The Hounds need a pair in the seventh to tie it up.

5:24pm- Jenny Swanson singles to give UIndy some one-out hope in the final inning, but Erb puts away her 98th career shutout, a DII record, to eliminate the Hounds.

5:41pm- Congratulations abound for the team and their great season. It didn't end exactly how they wanted, but it was a good run and will provide the learning experience for years to come.

8:00pm- We're off to Mac & Bob's for dinner. Great food and I think the calzone that Athletic Trainer Stephen Jones just ordered is bigger than my head.

Headed home in the morning after a fun run in the NCAA tournament that spanned three weekends. I'm sure it's an experience that these kids will never forget.

Blogging at College World Series- Day 3

10:00am- Bus loads for the field as the Hounds prepare to battle it out with seven other teams for the Division II national championship! First on the docket is Angelo State University, a team from the Lone Star Conference that whacked 89 homers this season, so the task to keep them in the park will be a large one.

10:25am- I run into some of our baseball players as I walk into the Stadium. They've just arrived after leaving Indianapolis in the middle of the night to get here. Awesome. Big props to Jason Ornellas, Cory Rupert and Matt Murphy-- among those who made that long early-morning trek.

12:00pm- Game is underway, UIndy is the visiting team and will wear their black uniforms. This is just fine for the Greyhounds, the team tells me they love to wear the blacks and they are not intimidated hitting first and taking a lead. I like it.

12:34pm- True to form, the Hounds do take the early lead, grabbing a run in the third inning on an RBI single from Megan Russell.

12:46pm- Angelo State strikes back with a run on a double steal to tie the score.

1:20pm- The Rambelles get back-to-back doubles in the 5th to score another run.

1:41pm- ASU gets one more run to take a 3-1 lead, but have not hit any homers and Russell has squandered just six hits.

1:50pm- Greyhounds drop the opening game, missing on a few opportunities. Russell pitched well but the Hounds' offense only got the one run. We'll have to wait until Saturday to be able to get back on the field and shake this off.

2:20pm- Head Coach Melissa Frost-Fisher speaks at the postgame press conference. She credits Angelo State with playing a great game, but felt her team needed to produce more at the plate to back Russell's start.

2:30pm- The team sticks around to watch the other games and scout the team they will get to play next.

7:00pm- It's Logan's for dinner tonight.

9:30pm- Although tomorrow is an "off day", practice time is 8:00 a.m., so it's an early retirement tonight for the team.

Blogging at College World Series- Day 2

WEDNESDAY
8:00am- The team arrives at the Moyer Complex for its first practice. The Hounds will put two hours in at the facility, taking the normal infield and outfield work in addition to hitting at the park.

11:50am- The bus loads to head to a barbeque in Salem for the teams. It is a nice park setting with a basketball court, picnic tables, cornhole and loads of food. The Hounds quickly make their way to the karaoke microphones. They proceed to belt out a rousing rendition of Sugarland's "Stay". Yeah, they crashed the party... Kinda like NCAA's Amy Farnum Novin mentions in her preview article about the Hounds . Cat Sampson again wows the crowd with her Technotronic skills. I'm pretty sure Cat was just born when that song was cool...

1:30pm- UIndy visits the V.A. Care Center to visit with patients. The residents were welcoming and many wanted to take their picture with the team. More than just the games, these championships are about the entire community. The Greyhounds made many more fans during their hour visit.

7:00pm- All eight teams are invited to a banquet honoring the teams and their accomplishments. Two representatives from each squad are chosen to present information about their team. Senior Maggie Swanson and junior Megan Russell shared their thoughts on the resiliency of their team and the payoff from all of the hard work they've logged this season. later, Russell would be named to the National Fastpitch Coach Association's All-America Second Team! It is her second All-America honor of her career after she was a Daktronics Third Teamer as a freshman. She is the first Greyhound to ever be named an All-American by the coaches' association, however. CONGRATULATIONS!

9:35pm- After a long post-banquet meeting with school administrators and head coaches, the players are anxiously waiting on the bus for the return trip to the hotel. We are once again serenaded from the back of the bus...

Blogging at the NCAA Softball World Series

The Greyhound softball team has advanced to the NCAA Division II Softball Championships in Salem, Va. as UIndy tries to earn its first national championship. While the softball team is in action, the men's golf team is in its national tournament and the track teams are in San Angelo, Texas for the D-II Outdoor meet.

All said, a lot going on in the world of UIndy athletics. We're going to try to capture the complete picture of the championships here in Virginia--more than just the games. The team has embarked on a week-long journey that will create lasting memories. Look here each day for an update.

TUESDAY
8:00 am- The Hounds load the bus outside Nicoson Hall, but not before Head Baseball Coach Gary Vaught offers his well-wishes and gives a nice motivational speech. Head Football Coach Joe Polizzi and Associate Athletic Director Matt Donovan are also on hand to greet Coach Melissa Frost-Fisher and send them on their way.

1:30pm- The bus stops at a Chili's in Huntingon, W.V. for lunch. The team seems loose, but focused. The waiter asks "Who do you want to face/not want to face?" After a very brief pause, Lindsey Gustine offers: "They don't want to face us".

5:00pm- Getting close to the hotel in Roanoke, Va. Unfortunately, they have found the wireless mic. Well, I shouldn't say unfortunately, because we all got a good laugh from it. Jenny Swanson offers up a stunning rendition of a Cher classic... Cat Sampson "pumps up the jam"...

5:30pm- We pull into the hotel and our host family greets us. They've done their best to make the team feel welcome, and this sign posted out front in the lobby is witness to the details these people have gone to in that regard.

7:30pm- Surprise. A dinner at Olive Garden. It was the same recipe for the NCAA Regionals and the NCAA Super Regionals...

10:00pm- Lights out. An early practice tomorrow morning followed by a BBQ, community service and a formal banquet at night.

Ok, so we haven't updated here in a bit. Well, in case you haven't noticed the Greyhound spring sports are keeping us quite busy. Hot in pursuit of a national championship! We've put together a page that has all the information you will need to follow the Hounds on their quests for greatness in the upcoming NCAA tournaments. Seven spring teams made the NCAA postseason: men's tennis, softball, baseball, men's golf, women's golf, women's track and men's track. Six of them will be in competition this week and next.

Amy Blogs the Championships

Student-athlete Amy Schmitz has qualified as one of 22 UIndy athletes participating at the 2009 NCAA Division Winter Sports Festival in Houston, Texas. The action-packed week will crown national champions in wrestling, men's and women's swimming and diving and men's and women's track and field. The UIndy athletics department has asked Amy to chronicle her experience during the week to help us catch a glimpse of the process and give us insight to not only the competition, but everything else that happens during championship week. Amy will share her thoughts each day here.

When asked to provide a daily journal for us all to read, Amy quipped "Ha, ha, well, I suppose I can capture this extravagant and glamourous lifestyle into blog form for ya'll!". Don't let her fool you. It's neither extravagance or glamour that has led her and 21 of her classmates to Houston, but instead grueling hours of practice, lifting weights, balancing academic commitments and traveling, boiled down to one week of competition against the finest athletes in all of Division II.

Sunday, March 15- 8:57 p.m.
What a week! I'm laying in the hotel room just relaxing and trying to process everything I experienced in Houston.

Yesterday was the end of competition. Emily Schaf (high jump) placed 11th and Andrea Horban (shot put) placed 8th! Another All America nod for the Hounds! We didn't end up going to the closing ceremonies becuase of how late the meet ran but we did go to an authentic Mexican restaurant which was delicious! After dinner we came back to the hotel for a full night of celebration and ruckus. Just so everyone knows, the Hounds were perfect representatives of UIndy! :)

Today it was sad to see all of the teams and athletes leaving. This week went by so fast and has left me with some wonderful memories. I enjoyed the festival and cannot believe my indoor track and field career is over, but what a way to go out!

Saturday, March 14th- 9:58 a.m.
So yesterday we competed and ... I'm an All American! I didn't throw as well as I was hoping to, but mentally yesterday was probably the biggest day of my career. I was able to get past some major mental hurdles I have battled since my first experience at nationals two years ago. I had such a good time competing, and I embraced the opportunity to throw the weight for the last time. After my last throw, even though it wasn't as far as I had hoped, I walked out of the ring smiling because I knew I had just ended my career with a mental win and an All American honor. How awesome is that?

Yesterday wasn't all great though for the Hounds. Sam Elmore and Willie Little (weight throw) did not make it to finals, and that broke my heart. They both work so hard and to see them struggle kills me. They were great teammates though and cheered me even during their heartbreak. I really admire them both for that.

We weren't able to watch the swimmers or wrestlers again, but we know that the swimmers were breakin' necks and cashin' checks AGAIN! GO HOUNDS! The wrestlers unfortunately didn't advance but they seem to still be in good spirits. Today we are going to the track to watch Emily Schaf (high jump) and Andrea Horban (shot put) compete. I am super pumped for the both of them and know that they both have the potential to do great things.

Tonight will be fun at the hotel - everyone is done competing and there should be a bit of a celebration! I just hope that the Hyatt doesn't turn into "Animal House"! haha! Well, I have to prepared to cheer for the Hounds and throw up the Dog Paw!

Wednesday, March 11- 8:52 p.m.
Today was our first full day in Houston, and I LOVE IT! We started out the day nice and early (7:30 a.m.!) for breakfast in the Student Athlete Lounge. The lounge is so nice, one half is all bean bag chairs, video games, pool tables, ping pong tables, and other tables/chaise lounges set up for athletes to relax on. Whoever set this up did an awesome job because it is a really great environment for athletes to relax and have fun. The other half of the lounge is set up with dining tables for breakfast and lounging. Breakfast was pretty good this morning, which makes me confident we will be well fed for the rest of the week!

After breakfast we headed over to the indoor track facility for practice. There is a great shuttle service going every half hour from the hotel to the different competition sites so that is convenient. The indoor track facility is really big and open, not quite like our racquetball court! For the throwers who are reading, their ring is a wooden platform much like ours, but slower. The cage is open like at Wabash, so it is a really familiar and comfortable setting all around for the Hound throwers. We had a great, concise practice and are feeling ready for Friday.

After practice we came back to the hotel, changed clothes, and walked about 10 blocks to the nearest grocery store. Every meal we have had here is at least $10, so we decided to be economic with our eating! It was nice to be able to experience some of downtown Houston first hand, but I am sure there is much more to see. It was a humid day, and the walk was a nice little cardio workout.

We relaxed for a few hours in our rooms after grocery shopping. Around 5:15 p.m. we headed over to the swimming facility to cheer on our Hounds! We saw a great finish by Erica Smith (6th in 200IM) and an amazing effort by Manuel Stiem (3rd in 200IM). It was exciting to watch a swim meet since I honestly have only attended one before! We were making sure to cheer loud and proud for our Hounds! On the way back to the hotel we ran into Dr. Pitts and her husband, Bill - what a great surprise!

The rest of our evening has been spent relaxing in the lounge and taking it easy. I have loved this experience mostly because I haven't had the chance to worry about competing. There is a really laid back vibe to everything, and I think it is because everyone is having such a good time! The NCAA did a wonderful job of making sure the athletes and guests were accommodated to and comfortable.

Here are some observations I have made in Houston so far:
-Warmer than Indiana, but not nearly as pretty!
-HUGE downtown!
-There are more roads and highways and one-ways going in every which direction! As Coach Holman exclaimed, "HAVE YOU EVER SEEN SO MANY ROADS?!" hahaha
-There is devastation still from Hurricane Ike, i.e. lots of homeless, damaged buildings (We are blessed to live among cornfields!)

Well that is all for today - only 2 more days until competition!

Tuesday March 10, 9:37 p.m.
What a long day of travel - but we are in Houston! The day started off with us leaving school with our bags and implements ready - which means my total luggage weight was right around 100 lbs. Ridiculous!

Our flights were mostly on time and travel was smooth. We were accompanied by the wrestling team which was cool.

We knew that we would be a bit late to the opening ceremonies, but our flight was slightly delayed and we ended up arriving at 8:30 p.m. when dinner was over and caught the tail end of the welcoming speech by the Vice President of Championships. So, all and all we didn't really get to experienece the opening ceremonies but the venue was amazing! Beautiful three-story place with fishtanks and such throughout.

So in lieu of the timing of tonight, the Hounds had our own opening ceremonies and banquet across the street at the Hard Rock Cafe!

Now we are headed back to our amazing hotel - we are on the 24th floor and the view is of downtown Houston. The weather is a slightly sticky 70 degrees with the forecast promising rain. Oh well, it's not Indy, and the championships start in 3 days! Swimming starts tomorrow so hopefully they kill it.

Monday, March 9th 2:18 p.m.
Holy packing! We leave tomorrow, and I have just begun the packing process. We will be in Houston from Tuesday, the 10th through Monday the 16th. I bet every other athlete who will be competing at the Winter Sports Festival this week (and has perfected the art of procrastination) is sitting in their room with about 1000 articles of clothing surrounding them and an empty suitcase in the middle of it all! I love the packing process, don't get me wrong, but I also like to have options for outfits, and six days of travel means a lot of options! No matter what I end up forgetting, my most important outfit will be in my carryon - uniform, spandex, throwing shoes, and throwing glove. These items are more important than anything else and I won't risk misplacing them.

Well that anticipation is mounting for Houston, that's for sure. While every other person is spending spring break on a beach, or partying, or just relaxing, I look forward to spring break for the opportunity to compete. I've had this date marked on my calendar for months now, and everyday of training has brought me to this week. It's pretty surreal to think that it is finally here! Not only am I heading to nationals, I am sharing this experience with four other track and field athletes (Willie Little, Sam Elmore, Emily Schaf and Andrea Horban), and all of us are fifth-year seniors! What a great spring break to end five years of hard work!

It is pretty sweet too that we aren't the only sport at this nationals. Two wrestlers and a whopping 15 UIndy swimmers are going as well! The Hounds will be invading Houston in FULL FORCE! Hopefully we will be able support our fellow athletes and vice versa. We start competition Friday, but I know wrestling and swimming begin before us. Either way this experience is going to be amazing.

Well, I'm off to the last practice before the trip. Last week couldn't have gone better in terms of practice, and I am looking to start this week off with a solid throw and light lift and begin peaking out for Friday. Tonight promises to be full of hectic packing and hopefully a good night's rest. Tomorrow we leave at 10:45 a.m. and touchdown in Houston around 6:00 p.m., with the opening ceremonies starting at 6:30 - so we will be rushed!

A day in the life...

The UIndy Athletic department was buzzing on Sat., Feb. 28-- a little more than usual. You see, while having multiple sportsr going on at the same time is no unusual occurance, this day featured a whole host of events going on in and around Indianapolis on a day that we'll attempt to chronicle here. The theme you'll notice throughout is "pitching in" and how the coaching staffs and athletic department help each other out.

8:55 a.m.- The UIndy tennis teams finish hitting in preparation for its 9:00 a.m. match with Franklin. The Greyhounds call the UIndy Tennis Center home and play all of their home matches there. The indoor facility allows the team the opportunity to host a lot more tournaments and the seven indoor courts can also be used in other ways, for example, the UIndy footballers find their way over there in the early morning to run sprints.

10:04 a.m.- UIndy men's soccer team members will be arriving soon to help facilitate the basketball games at home at Nicoson Hall. They are pinch-hitting for the baseball team, who usually performs the tasks of ticket-taking, set-up of the arena and manning the gates at each entrance. The baseballers are outside prepping Greyhound Park for the first home baseball game of the season, set to begin at noon.

11:35 a.m.- Things are in place at Greyhound Park for the baseball home opener so Assistant Athletic Director Scott Young turns his attention back to Nicoson Hall to help greet the officials for this afternoon's women's basketball game. As his "R-UIndy-Fit" pedometer would attest, Young will pile-up the steps on this day monitoring both baseball and basketball.

12:56 p.m.- National Anthem is being performed by Asst. Volleyball Coach Kyp Harasymowycz at the women's basketball game. Asst. Athletic Director Mitch Wigness is on the microphone for the games, helping out after the Hounds' public address announcer cannot attend the games with a death in the family. Assistant Sports Information Director Ryan Thorpe will be handling all of the media and statistics duties for the basketball game, which is being televised and is being covered by both Wisconsin-Parkside radio and WICR 88.7 FM on campus. SID assistant Jackie Paquette has the honor out at the baseball field and will handle the public address duties as well. There's really nothing an SID can't do. Really.

1:05 p.m.- Head tennis coach John Venter calls to report great news from the matches, a pair of 9-0 wins over Franklin.

1:34 p.m.- Word from Alabama is that it's still raining and the UIndy softball team, which was scheduled to play four games over two days there, will be forced to make another bus trip back home quicker than anticipated. Yuck.

2:46 p.m.- The Greyhound women are putting the finishing touches on a nice 77-70 win over Wisconsin-Parkside, who is ranked seventh in the Midwest Regional Rankings, just ahead of UIndy. That win will probably help the Hounds move up a spot before the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament, where they will face host Quincy in the opening round. The outlook is good for another Greyhound trip to the NCAA tournament.

3:10 p.m.- The UIndy men's team takes the floor for their game with the Rangers. The game will feature two of the league's best scorers in UWP's LaVontay Fenderson--who also leads all of Division II-- and UIndy's Keith Radcliff, who is fourth in the GLVC in scoring. They do not disappoint.

3:16 p.m.- After the Hounds baseball team dropped a close 2-1 contest in the opener to #6 Ashland, they find themselves in a slugfest again in game two. AU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth, but UIndy has answered with a run in the sixth to tie it. 3:58 p.m.- The University of Indianapolis Athletic Department is honoring its Hall of Fame Class of 2009 in addition to recognizing some 25th and 50th Anniversary teams during halftime of the men's game. The Hall of Famers will be treated to a nice catered dinner and will get to address their cohorts following the game at Primo's.

4:28 p.m.- Fenderson and Radcliff continue to duel it out. Radcliff has found his stroke from deep and Fenderson has made a concerted effort to get to the line in the second half.

5:15 p.m.- The Greyhounds fall to Parkside, but Radcliff leaves the home crowd with a career-high six triples en route to 27 points. Fenderson makes 16-of-17 from the line to help record 38 points for UWP.

5:27 p.m.- Although the Eagles baseball team sneaked away with a 3-1 win, it took them 11 innings to do so. Chase Kittinger kept his hot stick going, garnering three more hits in game two.

5:57 p.m.- It's on to the Hall of Fame banquet, where Mark Bless, Walter Brenneman, Dennis McNulty, Andy Richardson and the 1973 baseball team will all be enshrined. Associate Athletic Director Matt Donovan and his staff have worked diligently for nearly the entire year to make this event come together and again come out with flying colors.

6:37 p.m.- The UIndy SID staff begins to populate the website with results from the day and send out releases and scores to local media. It's a three-preson effort on this day with all of the different sports involved.

8:05 p.m.- The track and field teams are wrapping up competition at the GLVC Indoor Championships in nearby Crawfordsville, Ind. The women look in good shape to take their first indoor title and third overall since 2002.

9:35 p.m.- CHAMPIONS! The women's team, indeed, did outscore Lewis University and captured the crown with the help of four first-place finishes. Coach Scott Fangman is named the league's Women's Coach of the Year and Kierra Allen is the GLVC Freshman of the Year. The Greyhound men also have a great showing, taking second as a team and grabbing five total first-place finishes.

11:15 p.m.- Another hectic Saturday can finally come to an end, but not without the help of numerous folks to help keep things in line. It'll all get cranked back up in the coming weeks with women's basketball poised for the GLVC tournament and NCAA playoffs, five teams headed to Houston, Texas for the NCAA Division II Winter Festival (men's and women' track, wrestling, men's and women's swimming) and Spring Break action from both tennis teams, both golf teams and both baseball and softball. For love of the game...

Extravaganza Imminent

The Double-A Zone, the official blog of the NCAA, will be covering the UIndy women’s basketball game versus Lincoln Memorial Saturday. Bloggers Howard Smith and Ryan Powell will be coming to Nicoson Hall as part of their “Indiana basketball extravaganza: 11 college games in four days.”

From Friday, Dec. 19 through Monday, Dec. 22, Smith and Howard will revert back to nomadic ways with a 12-leg journey that will emcompass 10 arenas and nine Indiana cities in an attempt to “explore the state's rich college basketball heritage first-hand.”

After hitting two games tonight, UIndy will be the first of four venues the pair will visit Saturday. Click here throughout to trek to check on their progress.

UIndy baseball cleans up

The Greyhound baseball team did its part to help beautify the south side Saturday, Oct. 25. The players teamed up with UIndy nursing students to clean up both the old Village Pantry lot at the corner of Hanna & Carson as well as the city park across the street.

For the players, the community service work included painting, picking up trash, and trimming hedges on the VP lot. Meanwhile, the UIndy nursing students picked up trash and painted picnic tables at Southside Park.

Winter sports begin flurry of practice

With the fall sports winding down and the air getting cooler, the Greyhound winter teams are kicking it into high gear to prepare for their looming seasons. The men's and women's basketball teams, as well as the wrestling and swimming and diving squads are all practicing hard as their first competition dates fast approach.

The men's basketball team under the first-year direction of Stan Gouard is looking to improve upon their record of 14-13 from a year ago with a nucleus of six seniors and a roster full of new faces, including a host of transfers into the
Greyhound program.

Women's head coach LeAnn Freeland and her squad have the bar set high after a 22-8 finish last season and an NCAA Tournament bid. The Greyhounds return All-GLVC honorees Jessica Canary and Samantha Meissel and have added some newcomers to the mix. This will be Freeland's second year at the UIndy helm.

After graduating a talanted senior class a year ago, head coach Jay Yates and the UIndy wrestling team will look to some new leaders in the room. The Greyhounds return two national qualifiers on their 2008-09 squad, with Lynn Panko returning to the heavyweight class and Matt Irwin holding down the 141 spot. A pair of graduates from last year, Mike Horton and four-time All-American Shane Perkey, join the Greyhound coaching staff to provide their experience to the young squad, which features just three seniors.

The Greyhound swim squads have also been hitting the pool hard, with Gary Kinkead has a roster of 60-plus to choose from, including a trio of divers adding to the UIndy point totals this season. Kinkead returns a host of All-American performers from a season ago in which the men's squad finished 12th at Nationals and the women's team posted an 11th place finish in the nation.

Schmitz on BBC Radio!

Senior track and field athlete Amy Schmitz will be part of BBC radio's "5 Live" program Thursday morning from Indianapolis' Motor Speedway. Schmitz will join other Indianapolis personalities Joie Chitwood (Indy Motor Speedway), Sarah Fisher (IndyCar driver), Donald Davidson (IMS historian) and Bobby Plump (Milan H.S. basketball legend) on the program.

Simon Mayo, BBC radio host, will be in Indianapolis touring the U.S. Midwest, hitting five cities in five days. Hounds invade Lucas Oil Stadium

The Greyhound football team practiced at Lucas Oil Stadium Tuesday in an event hosted by the UIndy Alumni Association. Indy the Greyhound was there and provides this brief diary of the day's happenings:

3:04 p.m.- Coaches begin arriving at the Stadium in preparation for the practice session. The entire stadium belongs to the University of Indianapolis at this point, with the logos on the Stadium's scoreboard and ribbon board that hangs on the facade of the first deck.

3:30 p.m.- Team buses arrive with the players being ushered right into the stadium and down onto the field. While the temptation exists to gawk and take a peek around, the team is focused on the task at hand, prepping for Saturday's game against Ferris State.

3:54 p.m.- Fans and alums pile into the building to get a glimpse of the team practicing and walk around the facility. The Alumni Association has blocked off the Quarterback Club Suite behind the endzone, where it will entertain folks with great food, fellowship and visits from the Greyhound Athletics staff, cheerleaders and, of course, the mascot.

4:00 p.m.- Practice is underway. On the JumbroTron is the television broadcast replay of the Homecoming game with Northwood. It's currently 23-6 Northwood. Boo. I've got a hunch things will turn around, however.

4:24 p.m.- Great eats in the Suite as they watch the team run through drills.

4:31 p.m.- Craig Jenkins just dragged the entire Northwood defense with him en route to the endzone (sorry, watching the big screen again).

4:35 p.m.- President Dr. Pitts and her husband, Bill, are on hand to watch the festivities.

4:54 p.m.- Lance Lasker hits Matt Michuda with a 1-yd. pass and the crowd erupts!... ok, so it's business as usual but it was still a fun moment to see again.

5:34 p.m.- Indy the Greyhound heads to the field for a little chicanery and fun down on the sidelines.

5:38 p.m.- Indy misses a 20-yard field goal from the right hash. Doh. Good thing we have Jace Morrison.

6:00 p.m.- Practice ends as the team huddles near midfield.

6:02 p.m.- The team gets to see more of the stadium. Coaches, like Chris Keevers, take photos with their phones to show their kids.

6:15 p.m.- Coach Polizzi heads up to the Quarterback Club to thank everyone for their support. He shows great restraint by not smacking the mascot for asking for an autograph...

6:45 p.m.- Time to head back to campus... All-in-all, a fun time and a great opportunity to watch the Greyhounds practice in the new Lucas Oil Stadium. Greyhounds vs. Ferris State this Saturday at Key Stadium. Rock on.

Men's soccer in the community

The UIndy men’s soccer team reached out to the community Aug. 18, with members of the squad both participating in and assisting with the 1st annual “Shoot for Sammi” golf outing held at Hillcrest Country Club in Indianapolis.

The outing was held in memory of UIndy assistant coach Andy Hubbard’s infant daughter Samantha to benefit the CJ Foundation for SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) research. Samantha passed away from SIDS in November of last year.

Eight members of the team and Head Coach John Griffin golfed in the event, while the rest of the roster helped out with various aspects of the day.

In all, the golf outing raised approximately $27,000 for the CJ Foundation, through hole sponsors, golfer sponsorships, a silent auction and other donations. The Greyhound soccer team contributed $2,200 of that total through sponsors for their golfers and other donations. This is an event that Griffin says his team will continue to assist with each year.

Fall chaos begins on campus

Three more Greyhound teams opened fall camp this week, bringing the familiar chaotic bustle to the Ruth Lilly Center and Key Stadium on campus. The volleyball team is gearing up for an encore season. One year removed from the best campaign in school history, a 33-4 overall mark, the volleyballers have their sights set on a conference title and another NCAA tournament run.

The men’s soccer team has flourished under the direction of head coach John Griffin. In his four years at UIndy, Griffin has compiled a 43-25-10 record, easily tops in program history. The team advanced to the league semifinals last year and is poised to challenge for a conference crown.

Geoff VanDeusen begins his second season as the UIndy women’s soccer coach. He welcomes 13 newcomers to the program, supplementing an already-potent offense that generated a league-high-tying 119 points a year ago.

Football officially opens fall camp

109 student-athletes lined the football field for the first official practice of the 2008 season on Thursday. Head Coach Joe Polizzi’s squad is already just three weeks shy of its first game, a Thursday night opener at Kentucky Wesleyan on Aug. 28. The numbers are up to start the year, more than in recent seasons.

UIndy staffers were lauded with honors and new responsibilities over the summer. Lynn Griffin was recently promoted to Senior Associate Athletic Director. Associate Athletic Director Matt Donovan is the new President of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors. Assistant Athletic Director Daryl Gibbs had a snippet in the newest “NCAA Champion” magazine, talking about hiring diversity. UIndy also welcomed Scott Young to the administrative team full-time as he moves into the newly-created Assistant Athletic Director for Game Day Operations and Facilities role. Congrats to the entire senior staff.

What I did on my summer vacation

Greyhound golfers did not take summer vacation "off", rather using the opportunity to sharpen their skills and compete in a host of amateur events...with great success. Among the highlights were Seth Fair’s run at the Indiana Open, teaming with Justin Hueber to finish in the top ten at the Indiana Amateur, Sarah Prascsak winning the Ft. Wayne City Championship and two other tournament wins for UIndy women’s golfers.

Before diving headfirst into the new academic year, take pause on the year that was. The 2007-08 year provided tons of recognition for the University of Indianapolis through hosting opportunities and success at the national level. Alex Arestis became a national champion and set a new NCAA record in the process at the NCAA Division II Championships. The volleyball and women’s basketball teams each returned to the NCAA tournament while the softball team made its maiden voyage to the NCAA Regionals.
